אלף שנים לפני ישו, חינו של שאול, מלך ישראל הראשון, סר בעיני אלוהים וכתוצאה מכך גם מאבד את שפיותו. בינתיים הרחק מהארמון, הנביא האגדי שמואל מתוודע לרועה צעיר ומוכשר בשם דוד. אחד הסיפורים הגדולים ביותר שסופרו אי פעם מתחיל.

משפחתו של שאול צופה במצבו הנפשי המדרדר של המלך בדאגה רבה, ומוכנה לעשות כל שביכולתה כדי להגן על שלטונו. דוד רעב לחיים מחוץ לביתו, אבל מה שהוא מוצא מעבר להרים של בית לחם היא סכנה גדולה שלא דמיין כלל.
