In the present, after serving 15 years in prison for the murder of Alexandra Forrest, Daniel Gallagher is paroled with the goals of reconnecting with his family and proving his innocence. In the past, 2008, Dan celebrates his 40th birthday and first meets the charming colleague whose death would eventually lead to his incarceration and the destruction of the life he knew.

While in the past, Dan prepares his defense with Cabral. In the more distant past, key moments in Alex’s life shape the woman she becomes when she meets Dan.

Dan tries to move forward with regret and honesty, agreeing to continue at Jorge's firm and revealing to Ellen that the judge denied his appeal. When Mike and Dan are invited to brunch at Beth and Arthur's home, it becomes clear he is surrounded by secrets.
